Wild Meadows
Autogeography

The wild meadows of our childhood are unforgettable. Fading, black-and-white places peopled with curious figures, they accompany us throughout our adult lives, even in our deepest sleep. The »autogeography« is a dream report, an animated map of places like Einfeld, Tungendorf, Orschel-Hagen, Pillnitz, Dorstfeld. Where? And why? In the fantasy of the story-teller, ordinary places become blown up like pieces of scenery - one minute they are minute, the next they become a landslide. Voyeurs and exhibitionists hide in the idyllic surroundings of the town where grandparents live. An infant rocked to sleep amongst the sandy moorlands of Holstein recognises the prototype of his homeland at a kitchen table in Thuringia as a young man. The boy who escaped from Germany discovers the grim face of puritan futility in his American hosts. The young adult comes into contact with mentally disabled patients and their cynical carers, a borderline experience.
Places are sketched, laconically at first, until finally everything can be put into words: fear and desire, arrogance and fate, idleness and the thirst for knowledge. Beyond that lies the historical horizon the division of Germany, the drama of escape, the appearance of the Baader-Meinhof group, the era of the Jesus people. This book is a grotesque confession in ten chapters, a report of provincial places as the pacesetters of history.
